Noted Poet and Author Paul Janeczko Visits the School at Sweetser in Saco

Posted on 11/21/2011 at 10:45 am

On Tuesday, November 11, noted poet and author Paul Janeczko gave presentations on poetry to students at the School at Sweetser in Saco.

Janeczko is a former teacher who now visits about 40 schools a year, throughout the United States and internationally in Europe. He has published over 40 books mostly on poetry, as well as non-fiction guides for young writers and books for teachers. During the presentations he showed pages from his books, "A Poke in the I: A Collection of Concrete Poems", "A Kick in the Head: An Everyday Guide to Poetic Forms", and "A Foot in the Mouth: Poems to Read Aloud", which presented examples of specific types of poems.

Janeczko taught students about poems including concrete – poems in the shape of a topic like an apple or a popsicle – which the students were very eager to try their luck at figuring out. He also taught students about cinquian poems which employ a 5-line pattern and limericks which utilize a strict rhyme scheme.

Janeczko's visit was made possible through a generous donation from the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein.
