Sweetser Psychiatrist Recognized By American Association Of Community Psychiatrists

Posted on 04/20/2005 at 09:32 am

Sweetser Psychiatrist Dr. David Moltz was recently awarded the Moffic Award for Ethical Practice from the American Association of Community Psychiatrists. The award recognizes a practicing psychiatrist who has demonstrated high ethical standards in meeting community mental health needs.

Dr. Moltz was recognized this year for his work in establishing The Consultation Project, a collaboration with the Maine Psychiatry Association through which psychiatrists volunteer their time to provide consultation to primary care physicians across the state. The project has been in operation for more than a year and 22 psychiatrists have volunteered to participate.

"The project is especially important in Maine because most of the state's 300 psychiatrists practice in the lower quarter of the state, leaving family practitioners and other primary care providers without access to psychiatric consultation," said Dr. Moltz. "The Maine Psychiatric Association is attempting to address this problem by connecting psychiatrists and primary care physicians through The Consultation Project."

Considered a model by several others states, the project was also recently nominated by the American Psychiatric Association for a District Branch Best Practices Award, covering the region of New England and Eastern Canada.

In addition to his work with Sweetser, Dr. Moltz serves as chair of the Clinical Practice Committee of the Maine Psychiatric Association, and vice president of the Board of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Maine chapter.

With a history dating back to 1828, Sweetser is Maine's most comprehensive behavioral and mental health care organization dedicated to serving children, adults and families. Sweetser offers services that address emotional disturbances, mental illness, behavioral disorders and learning disabilities through an array of educational programs, preventive services, community-support services and residential homes.
