Sweetser to open School in Belfast
Posted on 07/01/2006 at 01:29 pm
This fall, Sweetser will open a private, special purpose school in Belfast to meet the needs of children with high degrees of intellectual capacity. The program will be the area’s only special education resource for the referral of difficult-to-manage students.
In the past, as many as one third of the children from Sweetser’s Belfast campus who were eligible for school programming were provided education through tutors on the campus, rather than attending public schools. Sweetser has worked with the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to meet the need for a specialized school where teachers, clinicians and support staff have advanced training in working with children with behavioral and mental disabilities.
In addition to serving our Belfast and Plymouth campuses, Sweetser’s school will be a regional Day Treatment Program for the midcoast area. Providing a quality education to special-needs children will allow the public school system to focus on students whose learning and behavioral challenges are not as severe and disruptive, making the new school program a welcome resource in the area.
