Sweetsers Learning Arts Fair Explores Hands-on Education

Sweetser’s 23rd annual Learning Arts Fair took place at The School at Sweetser in Saco on May 10. Supported by Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, the event is a school-wide celebration of a theme-based, hands-on learning experience.

This year, the students chose the theme of “In the Deep Blue Sea.” In the weeks leading up to the event, students participated in workshops and presentations including an outreach program by the Maine Maritime Museum and a field trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston.

During the fair, students shared their learning experience through exhibits, artwork, art-based activities and presentations. The Children’s Museum of Maine conducted a workshop called, “The Story of Istar,” which included a visit from Istar, a 45-foot life-size replica of a humpback whale. In addition, a fish manager from Pet Quarters put on a presentation about saltwater aquariums.

The Learning Arts Fair activities were followed by an outdoor barbeque lunch and concert by The Lower Village People, a band whose members include a teacher at The School at Sweetser.

Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution has been a loyal supporter of Sweetser’s Learning Arts Fair for several years, and once again donated $2,500 to support this year’s event.
