Maine Physician and Nurse Licensure

The licensing requirements for physicians and nurses in Maine vary from those of other states. The process for receiving a Maine license can take a minimum of three months, usually longer. It is advisable that you begin the process early and ask many questions in order to ensure that you can obtain the appropriate license. Licensure and the costs associated with obtaining Maine licensure are the responsibility of the applicant. As the applicant, you are the only person who may inquire as to the status, thus it is your responsibility to ensure that the appropriate information is provided and that the process goes smoothly.

Physician Licensing

Step #1

Federal Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) - Maine MD licensure requires that the FCVS be utilized. If you have previously utilized the FCVS you can simply update your profile and have new information verified and forwarded for a reduced fee. Maine Osteopathic licensure does not require the use of the FCVS, they will, however accept it. The FCVS process takes an average of 8 to 12 weeks, pending any missing information or difficulty in obtaining information. Answers to additional questions and an online application are available at www.FSMB.org (click on Credentials Verification).

Step #2

Maine License Application - An application for a Maine MD license can be obtained on the Maine Board of Licensure website at www.docboard.org/me/me_home.htm. Your application will be held until the state receives the completed FCVS documentation directly from the FCVS and any additional information that you have been required to present. Once that is completed, the application will go before the board. The board meets once per month-this factor can cause the licensure process to be extended by up to a month from when all documentation is complete. Inquiries as to status and further questions can be directed to:

Step #3

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration - If you have never applied for a DEA registration, you will need to complete the appropriate application for a new registration. Please note that there are different applications depending upon the type of activity you will be conducting. A listing of the category areas and applications can be obtained from their website at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/online_forms.htm. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may obtain the application forms and additional information from the Registration Department at DEA Headquarters by calling 1-800-882-9539.

If you currently hold a DEA registration in another state, a change of address will need to be completed. The form is available on their website, but will need to be printed and mailed or faxed to the Boston Field Division.
