I have lived in Maine for 35 years and raised my two sons here on this rocky coast. I hold Masters degrees in Professional Counseling and Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA., with an undergraduate degree from Boston University. In the recent past, my work has focused on the wonderful puzzle that is family systems with a specialty working with Gifted Kids.
TODAY'S WORLD is a time we never expected. Families are together 24-7. Behaviors escalate! TRUST that all will be well, we reassure when WE are unsure. So, we connect remotely. Surprisingly, my work with TEENS has actually improved using the phone tech they use every day. My work with KIDS is mainly now with parent and caregivers, advising how to calm and reassure and giving tips to make home schooling interesting and fun! What an opportunity to grow together! My work with anxiety and 20+ years of teaching pre-8 & gifted kids gives me great tools to pass on. I believe in kids & families. We can do this, CALL ME!
My 25 years of teaching and now counseling shows I love working with teens and young adults as well as parents and younger kids. I use a variety of tools to help kids relax and feel at home: writing and books, play, sand tray, puppetry and Family Systems Therapy. I want to help.
I have a specialty working with Gifted Kids and family issues of grief and trauma. I have worked with at risk kids and at risk parents as well. With an office in Kittery Point, my Golden Clementine and I welcome clients from both Maine and NH.

My name is Katlyn Furness; I am a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) with over 15 years in long-term recovery. As the founder of a private counseling practice, which is still in the beginning stages, I am deeply committed to helping individuals and families heal from the complex impacts of substance use, trauma, and mental health challenges. I studied at University of Maine at Augusta where I earned my MHRT/C and in combination with work experience I studied for and received my LADC. I am also currently attending CMCC for my Business management degree.
My passion for this work is rooted in my own lived experience. Growing up in a household marked by addiction, abuse, and emotional instability, I began using substances at a young age as a way to cope with unresolved trauma and anxiety. With an ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) score of 8, I intimately understand the connection between early trauma, mental health, and addiction, and how deeply those experiences shape the brain and behavior.
Now I am a dedicated mother, counselor, and advocate! I have made it my life’s mission to break generational cycles of trauma and addiction. In addition to individual and group counseling, I am working toward opening a women’s residential treatment program that allows children to remain with their mothers, providing a space where both can heal together.
My approach is trauma-informed, compassion-centered, and driven by the belief that healing is possible for everyone. Through my work, I hope to continue to be a voice for recovery, resilience, and radical hope. At the end of the day, I just want to treat people well.
